Nickel Coffee
Your Friendly Neighborhood Cafe ☕
Located beside a small open carpark off Middle Road, Nickel is a local specialty cafe that serves artisanal French-inspired pastries and fresh coffee.
One of the co-founders, Jian Yu, was formerly a manager in a popular Singaporean cafe chain. He now oversees the front-of-house and coffee operations, as well as roasting their own coffee beans.
His partner, Lee, is in charge of the kitchen, churning out fresh bakes on a daily basis. His skills are also respected in the industry, as the former owner of the famed Lee's Confectionery and a graduate from the internationally-recognised culinary school Ferrandi Paris.
A Step Towards Sustainability
Despite their vastly different backgrounds, Jian Yu and Lee shared a burning passion for the craft. They recognised that sustaining the food and beverage industry's success requires them, as modern entrepreneurs, to take responsibility for their actions.
As part of their commitment, they manage everything in-house, from roasting their own coffee beans to developing their own pastry recipes. Not only does this approach aid in quality control, but it also allows them to minimise waste by adjusting quantities to meet fluctuating demand.
Nickel Coffee also promotes the idea of upcycling by reusing their milk cartons as cup holders for their takeaway orders.
If we know that the utilities bill that we are paying is going to a company that is doing something sustainable, I think it is a no-brainer for us to work together.

Working With Flo
The entire process was carefully managed to ensure minimal disruption to Nickel Coffee’s operations, allowing them to continue serving customers without interruption. By switching to Flo Energy as their supplier, the cafe now sources 100% of its electricity from renewable sources, reducing its carbon footprint and aligning with a growing commitment to environmental responsibility.
This transition not only lowered Nickel Coffee’s emissions but also showcased their dedication to sustainable practices. This sets a benchmark in the local coffee industry and paves the way for other similar coffeeshops to follow suit, while also proving that Flo Energy is more than capable of supporting businesses of a smaller scale.
